SS26 “Igu Aro” Collection
- May 5, 2025
The Creative Director returned to her roots for SS26; to Umueri, her hometown where the IGU ARO festival originated and has been celebrated for centuries. This season, Kwelaku steps into its fifth year as a brand and tenth year in business with a pause; a moment to listen, to prepare, and to plant the seeds of our next chapter.
IGU ARO draws from one of the oldest surviving Igbo traditions; the annual New Year festival that heralds the planting season. In Umueri and across Igboland, the festival brings divination for the year ahead: a time of abundance, caution, or change. Through music, dance, and feasting, communities prepare their hearts and their work for what is to come.
For SS26, Kwelaku channels this heritage into a collection of renewal and preparedness. The color palette is rooted in earthy depth but illuminated with ceremonial vibrancy; from Divination Indigo to Fertile Clay. Richly patterned prints speak the language of prophecy and textures nod to the earth’s bounty; as seen in the fusion of abstracted prints such as the Cocoyam Patterns, Festival Crowd Silhouettes and Divination markings with rich Cotton-Silk Blends, Linen and Lace.
Sculptural yet fluid silhouettes prepare the wearer for both work and celebration. Though rooted in tradition, they are shaped for today and depict the effortless allure that the Kwelaku woman seeks. Every piece in IGU ARO feels like a garment for a new journey; something worn with hope, with awareness of heritage, and with readiness for whatever the season brings.
Kwelaku’s SS26 is not just a collection, it’s a celebration of where we come from and a vision of where we are going. Each piece is a seed planted in fabric, form, and story for the next decade of Kwelaku. In the language of IGU ARO, it is a season to plant boldly, adorn joyfully, and walk forward with readiness.
